My Brother

I was first–born
By fifteen months.
But he was leader, always:
First to discover
The ‘facts of life’;
First to encounter
The dangerous delight of sex;
First to settle
Or a particular partner;
First to become a father — grandfather;
And now, at eighty–two
First to explore
What lies (if anything)
Beyond cremation fire.
