Ideograph

This day says much in a small compass.
Brief snow
Hangs in the hedges,
A paper winter in a Chinese play.
A lamb's cry
Rings a cracked bell for April.
One slanting branch of hazel
Harks back to February.
Celandines
Liquefy in a burst of sun,
Buttering the year to May:
The whole ideograph
Indicating
March.
