Celebrating May

All day horse–chestnuts lifted
heraldic banners to the sun.
Lilacs set light to brief
candescent torches. Yellow and purple
flags unfurled.
Wisteria draped the windows.
Out on the hills, the rape
spread cloth of gold.
Hawthorns queened the hedges
in their maiden white.
And now night comes
the crescent moon and evening star
raise side by side
their eastern emblem
in a western sky
